Consider a forest ecosystem. The biotic components include trees, birds, insects, and fungi, while the abiotic components include sunlight, soil, and water. Each component plays a vital role; for example, trees provide oxygen and habitat, while soil supports plant growth. Understanding these interactions helps us appreciate the complexity of ecosystems.
In pairs, students will select a local ecosystem (e.g., a park, river, or garden) and list its biotic and abiotic components. They should consider how these components interact with each other. After 15 minutes, groups will share their findings with the class, discussing the significance of each component.
Students will choose an endangered species and research its role in its ecosystem. They will prepare a short presentation that includes information on the species' habitat, its interactions with other organisms, and the threats it faces due to human activities.
