Innate immunity is the body's first line of defense and includes physical barriers like skin, as well as immune cells that respond quickly to any invader. For example, when a pathogen enters the body, macrophages (a type of phagocyte) can immediately engulf and destroy it. In contrast, adaptive immunity involves a slower response that is specific to the pathogen. For instance, when a virus infects the body, T cells recognize and destroy infected cells, while B cells produce antibodies to neutralize the virus.
In pairs, students will examine diagrams of various immune cells, including neutrophils, macrophages, T cells, and B cells. They will label each cell type and discuss its specific function in the immune response. For example, students should note that neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and are crucial for the initial response to infection.
Students will choose one component of the immune system (e.g., a specific type of white blood cell or an organ) and conduct independent research. They will prepare a short presentation to share their findings with the class, focusing on the component's structure, function, and importance in the immune response.
