Today, we will learn about rhymes! Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end. For example, 'cat' and 'hat' rhyme because they both end with the 'at' sound. Rhymes are fun and help us play with sounds in language. We will listen to some rhymes and try to find more words that rhyme together.
Let's look at some examples together. I will say a word, and you will help me find a rhyming word. If I say 'dog', what rhymes with 'dog'? Yes! 'Log' and 'frog' both rhyme with 'dog'. Now, let's try another one. If I say 'sun', what rhymes with 'sun'? Great job! 'Run' and 'fun' are perfect rhymes!
Now it's your turn! I will say a word, and you will raise your hand when you think of a word that rhymes with it. Let's start with 'tree'. Who can think of a rhyming word? Excellent! 'Bee' and 'free' are both rhymes. Let's do a few more together, like 'ball' and 'call'. Remember to listen carefully and think of words that sound the same at the end!
For your independent practice, I want you to create your own rhyming pairs. Take a piece of paper and write down a word at the top. Then, think of at least two words that rhyme with it and write them down below. For example, if you write 'cat', you could write 'hat' and 'bat'. Once you finish, you can share your rhymes with a partner!
Answer: Star
The word 'star' has the same ending sound as 'car', making them rhymes.
Answer: Bat
'Bat' and 'hat' both end with the 'at' sound, so they rhyme.
Answer: Spoon
'Spoon' rhymes with 'moon' because they share the same ending sound.
Answer: Day
'Day' does not rhyme with 'light' because it has a different ending sound.
Answer: Bee
'Bee' rhymes with 'tree' as they both end with the 'ee' sound.
Answer: Ball - Call
'Ball' and 'Call' rhyme because they share the same ending sound.
Answer: Sing
'Sing' rhymes with 'ring' because they both end with the 'ing' sound.
Answer: Cook
'Cook' rhymes with 'book' as they have the same ending sound.
