Today, we will learn about izilwane, which means 'animals' in isiZulu. We will look at pictures of different animals and learn their names in isiZulu. For example, a dog is called 'inja', and a cat is 'ikati'. We will also discuss where these animals live and what they eat.

Let’s look at some pictures of animals. I will show you a picture of an elephant. In isiZulu, we say 'iphala'. Can anyone tell me what sound an elephant makes? Yes, it trumpets! Now, let’s look at a lion. In isiZulu, we say 'ingonyama'. What sound does a lion make? Correct, it roars! Let’s repeat these names together.

Now, let’s work in groups. Each group will receive a set of animal pictures. I want you to discuss in isiZulu what each animal is called and where it lives. After that, each group will present one animal to the class. Remember to use the sentence structure: 'Le yinja' (This is a dog) or 'Le ingonyama' (This is a lion).

For independent practice, I want you to draw your favorite animal and label it in isiZulu. Write the name of the animal at the bottom of your drawing. You can also write a sentence about what your animal eats. For example, 'Iphala lidla amahlamvu' (The elephant eats leaves).
