isiZulu Home Language - Term 1 - Week 10

Today, we will learn about different animals and the sounds they make in isiZulu. We will start by naming some common animals like 'inja' (dog), 'kati' (cat), and 'ibhubesi' (lion). Each animal has a unique sound that we will also learn. For example, a dog says 'bark' which is 'phika' in isiZulu.

Let’s look at some examples together. The word for 'cow' in isiZulu is 'inkomo', and the sound it makes is 'moo' which is 'muu' in isiZulu. We can practice saying these words together. Repeat after me: 'inkomo' - 'muu'. Now, let’s do the same for 'giraffe' which is 'ijirafi' and it doesn’t make a sound like other animals.

In groups, I want you to choose an animal and act out the sound it makes. For example, if you choose 'inja', you will bark like a dog. After you act out your animal, the rest of the class will guess which animal you are. This will help us remember the names and sounds of the animals in isiZulu.

Now, I want each of you to draw your favorite animal and write its name in isiZulu. For example, if you draw a cat, write 'kati' underneath. Once you finish, share your drawing with a partner and tell them what sound your animal makes. This will help reinforce your learning.
