isiZulu Home Language - Term 4 - Week 2

Today, we will learn about different animals and how to say their names in isiZulu. Animals are living beings that can be found in our homes, farms, and in the wild. We will focus on some common animals such as 'inja' (dog), 'kati' (cat), 'ihhashi' (horse), 'ingulube' (pig), and 'inyoni' (bird).

Let’s look at some pictures of animals. For example, here is a picture of a dog. In isiZulu, we say 'inja'. Can anyone tell me what sound a dog makes? Yes, it barks! Now, let’s look at a cat. In isiZulu, we say 'kati'. What sound does a cat make? Correct, it meows! We will continue with more animals.

I will show you flashcards with pictures of animals. When I show you a card, I want you to say the name of the animal in isiZulu. For example, if I show you a picture of a horse, you will say 'ihhashi'. After we practice together, I will ask you to match the animal names to the correct pictures on your desks.

Now it’s your turn! I want you to draw your favorite animal and write its name in isiZulu underneath. Then, think of one sentence to describe your animal. For example, if you draw a dog, you might write, 'Inja iyabark.' (The dog barks.) Once you finish, we will share our drawings with the class.
