Setswana Home Language - Term 1 - Week 4

Today, we will learn about different animals in Setswana. Animals are living creatures that can be found in our homes, farms, and the wild. We will focus on common animals such as 'ntšhu' (cat), 'pudi' (sheep), 'nku' (goat), 'kolobe' (pig), and 'ntšwa' (dog). Let’s practice saying their names together!

Let’s take the animal 'ntšhu' (cat) as an example. We can say, 'Ntšhu e na le mekgwa e metle' which means 'The cat has good habits.' We can also say, 'Ntšhu e a tshwara' meaning 'The cat is playful.' Let’s think of other sentences we can create for different animals.

In groups, each learner will choose an animal and act it out without speaking. The rest of the class will guess which animal it is in Setswana. After guessing, the acting learner will describe the animal using a simple sentence. For example, if the animal is 'kolobe', they might say, 'Kolobe e a ja' which means 'The pig eats.'

Each learner will draw their favorite animal and write a simple sentence about it in Setswana. For instance, if a learner draws a 'nku', they could write, 'Nku e na le borai' meaning 'The goat has horns.' Encourage learners to use colors and be creative with their drawings.
