Today, we will learn about the people who help us in our community. These are called community helpers. Examples include teachers, doctors, and police officers. We will also talk about places in our community, such as schools, hospitals, and shops. Understanding these roles helps us appreciate the work they do.
Let’s look at some pictures of community helpers. For example, here is a picture of a teacher. In Setswana, we say 'mothusi wa thuto'. Can anyone tell me what a teacher does? Yes, they help us learn! Now, let’s look at a picture of a doctor. In Setswana, we say 'ngaka'. What does a doctor do? Correct! They help us when we are sick.
In groups, let’s choose a community helper to act out. One person will pretend to be the helper, while others will ask questions in Setswana. For example, if you are a doctor, your friends might ask, 'O thusa bjang?' (How do you help?). This will help us practice speaking and using our new vocabulary.
Now, I want each of you to draw your favorite community helper and write a sentence about what they do in Setswana. For example, if you draw a firefighter, you might write, 'Mokhanselane o thusa go pholosa batho.' (The firefighter helps to save people). After you finish, we will share our drawings with the class.
