Today, we will learn about different animals in Xitsonga. Animals are important in our lives and can be found in many places. We will focus on common animals such as 'ngwetsi' (cat), 'nku' (dog), 'xihlahla' (bird), 'ndzhaka' (elephant), and 'xihundla' (lion). Let's start by looking at pictures of these animals and saying their names together.
Let's look at a picture of a 'ndzhaka' (elephant). What do you see? It is big and gray. Now, let's say it together: 'ndzhaka'. Can anyone tell me what sound an elephant makes? Yes, it trumpets! Now, let's do the same with a 'xihundla' (lion). It is yellow and has a mane. Let's say 'xihundla' together.
Now, we will play a matching game. I will show you pictures of animals, and you will match them with their names in Xitsonga. For example, if I show you a picture of a 'nku' (dog), you will find the word 'nku' on the board and point to it. Let's do this together for a few animals, and then you can try it on your own.
For your independent practice, I want you to draw your favorite animal and write its name in Xitsonga. Underneath your drawing, write one sentence describing the animal. For example, if you draw a 'ngwetsi' (cat), you could write, 'Ngwetsi i xihlahla' (The cat is small). Once you finish, we will share our drawings with the class.
