Xitsonga Home Language - Term 4 - Week 5

Today, we will learn about different animals and the sounds they make. We will focus on animals that we can find in our environment, such as 'ngwedi' (lion), 'ndzhaka' (chicken), and 'nku' (sheep). I will show you pictures of these animals, and we will practice saying their names together in Xitsonga.

Let’s look at the lion. In Xitsonga, we say 'ngwedi'. When a lion roars, it makes a loud sound. Can anyone tell me what sound a lion makes? (Encourage responses). Now, let’s look at the chicken. In Xitsonga, we say 'ndzhaka'. What sound does a chicken make? (Encourage responses).

I will show you a picture of an animal, and you will tell me its name in Xitsonga. Then, I will play the sound of that animal, and you will match it to the correct picture. For example, if I show you a picture of a cow ('ngweti'), you will say 'ngweti' and listen for the sound it makes. Let’s do this together with a few animals.

Now it’s your turn! I want you to draw your favorite animal and write its name in Xitsonga. After you finish your drawing, you will present it to the class and make the sound that your animal makes. This will help us remember the names and sounds of the animals we learned today.
