Punctuation marks are important in writing because they help us understand how to read a sentence. For example, a full stop (.) tells us that a sentence has ended, while a question mark (?) shows that someone is asking something. Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at the sentence: 'Ek hou van appels' (I like apples). This sentence is correct, but if we say 'Ek hou van appels' without a full stop, it is incomplete. We need to add a full stop at the end: 'Ek hou van appels.' Now it is a complete thought!
In groups, we will read a short story together. As we read, I want you to listen carefully for punctuation marks. When we find a missing punctuation mark, we will discuss where it should go and why it is important. This will help us understand how punctuation changes the meaning of sentences.
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation mark. After you finish, swap your paper with a partner and check each other’s work for correct punctuation and spacing.
