Phonics is the method of teaching reading by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters. Today, we will focus on short vowel sounds: 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', and 'u'. We will listen to words that contain these sounds and practice saying them together. Understanding these sounds will help us read and write better.
Let's look at some examples of words with short vowel sounds. For the vowel 'a', we have 'cat', 'bat', and 'hat'. For 'e', we can use 'pen', 'ten', and 'hen'. I will write these words on the board, and we will sound them out together. Notice how each vowel sound changes the word. This is how we build words!
Now that we have practiced building words, let's create sentences using some of these words. I will give you a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'cat', you might say, 'The cat is on the mat.' Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end of your sentence. Let's try a few more together!
For your independent practice, I want you to choose three short vowel words from our list. Write each word in a sentence of your own. Make sure to use correct punctuation and spacing. After you finish writing, draw a picture that represents your sentence. This will help you connect your writing with your creativity!
