Punctuation marks are symbols that help us understand how to read sentences. For example, a period (.) tells us to stop, while a question mark (?) shows that someone is asking something. Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our writing.
Let's look at this sentence: 'the cat is sleeping' We need to add a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end. It should read: 'The cat is sleeping.' Notice how the capital letter shows the start of the sentence and the period shows it is finished.
In small groups, we will read a short story together. As we read, I want you to listen for punctuation marks. When you hear one, raise your hand! After reading, we will discuss where we found the punctuation and why it is important.
