A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiXhosa, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help our readers understand our sentences better. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our sentences.
Let's look at some examples. 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'Uphi uThandi?' (Where is Thandi?), we use a question mark. For excitement, we can say, 'Ngiyajabula!' (I am happy!) and use an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence has a clear meaning and ends with the correct punctuation.
Now, let's practice together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me punctuate it. For example, if I say 'UThandi uthanda izinja', what punctuation should we use at the end? (Pause for responses.) Yes, we should use a full stop! Let's try another one: 'Uphi uThandi'. What punctuation goes here? (Encourage students to respond.) Correct, a question mark!
