A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiXhosa, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help our readers understand our sentences better. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Each mark has a special purpose: a full stop ends a statement, a question mark indicates a question, and an exclamation mark shows excitement or strong feelings.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences: 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. Now, if we ask a question, like 'UThandi uyadlala na?' (Is Thandi playing?), we use a question mark at the end. For excitement, we can say 'UThandi udlala kakhulu!' (Thandi plays a lot!), which ends with an exclamation mark.
Now, let's create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ibhola iyabhalwa.' (The ball is being kicked.) Remember to add a full stop at the end. Let’s try another word: 'umntwana' (child). What sentence can we make? Great job! Don’t forget to use the correct punctuation.
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the right punctuation. Remember to space your words properly so they are easy to read!
