A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiXhosa, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' means 'Thandi loves to play.' We will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation marks to show the end of our thoughts.
Let's look at some examples together. If I say, 'UJohn uthanda ibhola,' it means 'John loves soccer.' Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if I ask, 'Uphi uThandi?' it means 'Where is Thandi?' This sentence ends with a question mark. We will practice writing similar sentences in our exercise today.
Now, let's write a sentence together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. The sentence is: 'UThandi uthanda ukufunda.' What do we need at the beginning? Yes, a capital letter! And what do we need at the end? Correct, a full stop! Let's write it together: 'UThandi uthanda ukufunda.'
Now it's your turn! I want each of you to write three sentences about what you like to do. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, we will share our sentences with the class. Don't forget to check your spacing between words!
