A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiXhosa, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand the meaning of sentences. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). A full stop tells us that the sentence has ended, a question mark indicates a question, and an exclamation mark shows strong feelings or excitement.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences: 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. Another example is 'UThandi, uthanda ukudlala?' (Does Thandi love to play?) This one ends with a question mark. Notice how the punctuation helps us understand what the sentence means.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'UThandi udlala ngebhola.' (Thandi plays with a ball.) After we write the sentence on the board, we will add the correct punctuation at the end. Remember to leave a space between each word!
Now it’s your turn! I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After you finish writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if you used spaces correctly. Don’t forget to use a full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark where needed!
