A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiZulu, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to make our writing clear.
Let’s look at some examples. 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Another example is 'Uphi uSibusiso?' (Where is Sibusiso?) This sentence ends with a question mark because it is asking something. Notice how the punctuation helps us understand the meaning.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ibhola liyaphuma.' (The ball is rolling.) Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. Let’s try a few more words together!
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you write your sentences, read them to a partner and check if they have the right punctuation and spacing.
