A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. In isiZulu, sentences can start with a capital letter and end with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation marks to show the end of our thoughts.
Let’s look at some examples. 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Another example is 'Uphi uSipho?' (Where is Sipho?) This sentence ends with a question mark because it is asking something. Notice how punctuation helps us understand the meaning of the sentences.
Now, let’s create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ibhola liyabhalwa.' (The ball is being kicked.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. Let’s practice with a few more words: 'umfana' (boy), 'izinkanyezi' (stars).
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about what you like to do. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the right punctuation. This will help you learn from each other.
