A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiZulu, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand the meaning of sentences. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation marks to make our writing clear.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences: 'UThandi uthanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'Uphi uThandi?' (Where is Thandi?), we use a question mark. For excitement, we can say 'Ngiyajabula!' (I am happy!) and use an exclamation mark. Notice how punctuation helps us understand the type of sentence.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me make a sentence. For example, if I say 'ikati' (cat), you might say, 'Ikati liyadlala.' (The cat is playing.) Let’s write this sentence on the board. Remember to add a full stop at the end. After we write it, we will read it together and check if we used the correct punctuation.
Now it’s your turn! I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After you finish writing, draw a picture of your animal. Once everyone is done, we will share our sentences with the class. Remember to listen carefully to your friends' sentences and think about the punctuation they used.
