A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiZulu, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'Ngiyathanda ukudlala.' means 'I love to play.' It is important to use the correct punctuation to show how we feel about what we are saying.
Let's look at some examples of sentences. 'UJohn uyafunda.' means 'John is studying.' Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Uphi uJohn?' which means 'Where is John?' This sentence ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say, 'Ngiyajabula!' meaning 'I am happy!' This ends with an exclamation mark.
Now, let's create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me make a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ngiyadlala ngebhola.' (I am playing with a ball.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After we create a few sentences together, I will ask you to share your own sentences with the class.
Now it's your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish writing, pair up with a friend and read your sentences to each other. Check if your sentences have the correct punctuation and help each other if needed.
