Punctuation marks are important in writing because they help us understand how to read sentences correctly. In isiZulu, we use full stops (.), commas (,), and question marks (?) to show pauses and the end of thoughts. Today, we will learn how to use these punctuation marks in our sentences.
Let’s look at the sentence: 'UThandi uthanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. If we want to ask a question, we can change it to: 'UThandi uthanda ukudlala?' (Does Thandi love to play?) Here, we use a question mark at the end.
Now, let’s work together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me add punctuation. For example, I say: 'UJohn uthanda izinja' (John loves dogs). What punctuation should we add at the end? Yes, a full stop! Let's try another one: 'UJohn uthanda izinja' and now make it a question: 'UJohn uthanda izinja?'
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about what you love to do. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and check if they have the right punctuation.
