Fractions represent parts of a whole. For example, if we have a pizza divided into 4 equal slices and we take 1 slice, we have 1 out of 4 slices, which is written as 1/4. We can also show this using pictures or objects to help us visualize the concept.

Decimals are another way to represent parts of a whole, often used with numbers. For example, 0.5 represents half of something. It is important to understand that 0.5 is the same as 1/2. We can use a number line to show how decimals fit between whole numbers.

Let’s say we have a chocolate bar divided into 8 pieces. If we eat 3 pieces, we can say we have eaten 3/8 of the chocolate bar. We can draw this chocolate bar and shade in 3 out of the 8 pieces to visualize the fraction.

If we have a dollar and we divide it into 10 equal parts, each part is worth 0.10 or 10 cents. This shows how decimals can represent parts of a whole dollar. We can use coins to help us understand this better.

Let’s practice identifying fractions together. I will show you a picture of a circle divided into 4 equal parts. If I shade 2 parts, what fraction do we have? (Answer: 2/4). Now, let’s draw a circle and divide it into 6 parts. Shade 1 part and write the fraction.

Now, let’s look at decimals. I will write the number 0.25 on the board. Can anyone tell me what this means? (Answer: It means 25 out of 100, or a quarter). Let’s practice writing decimals for different fractions. For example, what is 1/2 in decimal form? (Answer: 0.5).

Now it’s your turn! Draw a rectangle and divide it into 4 equal parts. Shade 3 parts and write the fraction. Next, draw a circle divided into 8 parts and shade 5 parts. What fraction is that? (Answer: 5/8).
