Measurement is how we find out the size, length, weight, or volume of something. We use different tools to measure, like rulers for length, scales for weight, and measuring cups for volume. In this lesson, we will focus on measuring length using non-standard units, like blocks or hands, and standard units, like centimeters.
Let's measure the length of a pencil using blocks. If the pencil is 5 blocks long, we can say the pencil's length is 5 blocks. We can also compare it to other objects. For example, if a book is 8 blocks long, we can see that the book is longer than the pencil. This helps us understand how measurement works.
Now, let's measure some objects in our classroom together! I will show you a ruler, and we will measure the length of a desk. First, we will line up the ruler with one end of the desk and see where it ends. What number do we see? Let's write it down. After that, we will measure a chair and compare the lengths. How many centimeters is the chair? Discuss your findings with your partner.
It's your turn to measure! Choose three objects in the classroom and measure their lengths using either blocks or a ruler. Write down the lengths in centimeters or blocks. After measuring, draw a picture of each object and label its length. Remember to check your work and see if you made any mistakes. If you did, think about how you can correct them.
