Fractions represent parts of a whole. For example, if we have a pizza cut into 4 equal slices and we take 1 slice, we can say we have 1/4 of the pizza. The top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we have, and the bottom number (denominator) tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole. For example, if we have a whole and we divide it into 10 equal parts, each part is represented as 0.1. This means that if we take 1 part, we have 0.1 of the whole. Decimals can also be used to show fractions, like 1/2 can be written as 0.5.

Let's say we have a chocolate bar divided into 8 pieces. If I eat 3 pieces, I can represent this as a fraction: 3/8. The numerator is 3 because I ate 3 pieces, and the denominator is 8 because there are 8 pieces in total.

If we have a glass of juice that is filled halfway, we can say that the glass is 0.5 full. This shows that half of the glass is filled, which is the same as saying 1/2.

Let's look at this shape divided into 4 equal parts. If I shade 2 parts, what fraction do we have? (Students respond: 2/4). Great! Now, can someone tell me how we can simplify this fraction? (Students discuss simplifying to 1/2).

If we have 10 marbles and I give you 3, how many marbles do you have? (Students respond: 3). Now, if we think of the total as 1 whole, what decimal would represent the 3 marbles? (Students respond: 0.3). Excellent!
