Today, we will learn about fractions! A fraction represents a part of a whole. For example, if we have a pizza cut into 4 equal slices and we take 1 slice, we have 1 out of 4 slices, which we write as 1/4. We can also use shapes like circles and squares to show fractions visually. When we divide a shape into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole shape.

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole, similar to fractions. For example, if we have a whole and we divide it into 10 equal parts, each part is 0.1 or one-tenth. We can write 1/10 as a decimal, which is 0.1. Decimals are often used in money, where 1 dollar can be written as 1.00, and 50 cents can be written as 0.50.

Let's look at a circle divided into 4 equal parts. If we shade 2 parts, we can say we have shaded 2/4 of the circle. We can simplify this fraction to 1/2 because 2 out of 4 parts is the same as half of the circle. Now, if we have a rectangle divided into 10 equal parts and we shade 3 parts, we can say we have 3/10 of the rectangle shaded, which is also 0.3 in decimal form.

Now, let’s practice identifying fractions together. I will show you a shape divided into equal parts. How many parts are shaded? If I show you a square divided into 8 parts and 3 parts are shaded, what fraction do we have? Yes, that’s 3/8! Now, let’s try another one. If I show you a circle divided into 6 parts and 1 part is shaded, what fraction is that? Correct, it’s 1/6!

Now it’s your turn! I want you to draw a circle and divide it into 4 equal parts. Shade 1 part and write the fraction. Then, write the decimal for that fraction. Next, draw a rectangle divided into 10 parts, shade 4 parts, and write both the fraction and decimal for that. Remember, show your working clearly!
