Multiplication is a way to add groups of the same size together. For example, if we have 3 groups of 2 apples, we can write this as 3 x 2. This means we have 2 apples in each of the 3 groups. We can also think of it as 2 + 2 + 2, which equals 6 apples in total.
Division is the process of splitting a number into equal parts. For instance, if we have 6 apples and we want to share them equally between 3 friends, we can say 6 ÷ 3. This means each friend gets 2 apples. Division helps us understand how many groups we can make or how many items each group will have.
Let's look at the multiplication problem 4 x 3. We can visualize this with counters. If we have 4 groups of 3 counters, we can count them all together: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. So, 4 x 3 = 12.
For the division problem 12 ÷ 4, we can use the same counters. If we have 12 counters and we want to divide them into 4 equal groups, we can place 3 counters in each group. Therefore, 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
In pairs, students will use blocks to create their own multiplication problems. For example, they can make 2 groups of 5 blocks. They will then count the total blocks and write the multiplication sentence. Encourage them to share their findings with the class.
Next, students will take 15 counters and work in groups of 3 to divide them equally. Each group will determine how many counters each person gets and write the division sentence. Discuss the different ways they can share the counters.
Students will complete a worksheet with multiplication and division problems. They will solve problems like 5 x 2 and 10 ÷ 2. They should show their working by drawing pictures or using counters. After completing the worksheet, they will review their answers with a partner.
