A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. In Sepedi, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to show the end of a sentence. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at some examples. 'Ke rata go bala.' (I like to read.) is a complete sentence that ends with a full stop. If I ask, 'O kae?' (Where are you?), it ends with a question mark. And if I say, 'Tshepo e monate!' (Tshepo is wonderful!), it ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence has a clear meaning and ends with the correct punctuation.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ngwana' (child), you might say, 'Ngwana o a tshwara.' (The child is playing.) Let’s write it on the board together. Remember to add a full stop at the end. After we write it, we will read it aloud and check if we used the correct punctuation.
Now it’s your turn! I want each of you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After you finish writing, pair up with a partner and read your sentences to each other. Check if you both used punctuation correctly and help each other if needed.
