A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sepedi, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help our readers understand our sentences better. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). A full stop is used at the end of a statement, a question mark is used at the end of a question, and an exclamation mark shows excitement or strong feelings.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. 'Ke rata go bala.' (I like to read.) This sentence ends with a full stop because it is a statement. 'O kae?' (Where are you?) This sentence ends with a question mark because it is asking something. 'Ke thabile!' (I am happy!) This sentence ends with an exclamation mark because it shows excitement. Notice how the punctuation changes the meaning of the sentences.
Now, let’s practice together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me decide what punctuation mark to use at the end. For example, if I say 'Ke a etela mmino', what should I put at the end? (Pause for responses.) Correct! A full stop because it is a statement. Let’s try another one: 'O batla go ja?' (Do you want to eat?) What punctuation mark should we use?
