A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought. In Sesotho, just like in English, we need to use punctuation marks to show the end of a sentence. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). For example, 'Ke rata ho bapala' (I like to play) ends with a full stop because it is a statement. Using punctuation helps our readers understand our sentences better.
Let's look at some examples of sentences in Sesotho. 'O na le ntja.' (He has a dog.) This sentence ends with a full stop. If we want to ask a question, we can say, 'O na le ntja?' (Does he have a dog?) This sentence ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say, 'Ke thabile!' (I am happy!) which ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how the punctuation changes the meaning of the sentence.
Now, let's create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'mofuta' (type), you might say, 'Ke batla mofuta o motle.' (I want a nice type.) Remember to add a full stop at the end. After we create a few sentences together, we will check if we used the correct punctuation and spacing.
