A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sesotho, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a full stop (.) or a question mark (?). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation marks to help our readers understand our thoughts.
Let's look at some examples. 'Ke rata ho bapala.' (I like to play.) is a complete sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Another example is 'O kae?' (Where are you?). This sentence ends with a question mark because it is asking something. We will practice writing similar sentences today.
Now, let's write a sentence together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. The sentence is: 'Rea tseba ho bala.' (We know how to read.) What do we need at the beginning of the sentence? (A capital letter!) And what do we put at the end? (A full stop!) Great job! Let's write it together.
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about what you like to do. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the correct punctuation and spacing.
