Punctuation marks are important in writing because they help us understand the meaning of sentences. In Sesotho, we use full stops (.), commas (,), and question marks (?) to show pauses and the end of thoughts. Today, we will learn how to use these punctuation marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at some sentences. For example, 'Ke rata ho bapala.' (I like to play) has a full stop at the end. If we ask a question, like 'U na le ngwana?' (Do you have a child?), we use a question mark. Notice how the punctuation changes the meaning of the sentence.
I will read a sentence aloud, and you will help me add the correct punctuation. For example, if I say, 'Ke ja lebese' (I am drinking milk), what should we add at the end? Yes, a full stop! Now let’s try another one: 'O kae' (Where are you). What punctuation do we need here? Correct, a question mark!
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite food. Remember to use a full stop at the end of each sentence. After you write your sentences, check to see if you have used the correct spacing between words and if your punctuation is correct. We will share our sentences with the class afterward.
