A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sesotho, just like in English, sentences start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. Common punctuation marks include the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to make our writing clear.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. 'Ke rata ho bapala.' (I like to play.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Another example is 'O kae?' (Where are you?) which ends with a question mark. Notice how punctuation helps us understand the meaning of the sentence.
Now, let’s create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ntate' (father), we can say 'Ntate o sebetsa.' (Father is working.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Let’s try another one: 'moholo' (grandmother). What sentence can we make?
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the correct punctuation and spacing.
