A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sesotho, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand when a sentence ends or when we should pause. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences and use these punctuation marks correctly.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. For instance, 'Ke rata ho bapala' means 'I like to play.' Notice that it ends with a full stop. If I ask, 'Na u rata ho bapala?' which means 'Do you like to play?', it ends with a question mark. Lastly, if I say, 'Kea thabela!' meaning 'I am happy!', it ends with an exclamation mark. Each of these sentences conveys a different feeling or thought, and the punctuation helps us understand that.
Now, let’s practice writing sentences together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, I say, 'Ke na le ntja.' which means 'I have a dog.' What punctuation should we use at the end? Yes, a full stop! Let’s write it together. After that, I will ask you to come up with your own sentences, and we will discuss the punctuation needed for each.
