A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sesotho, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand when a sentence ends or when we need to pause. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. 'Ke rata ho bapala.' (I like to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'U kae?' (Where are you?), we use a question mark. For excitement, we can say, 'Ke thabile!' (I am happy!) and end it with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence has a clear beginning and end, and the punctuation helps us understand the meaning.
Now, let’s create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me make a sentence. For example, if I say 'ntja' (dog), you might say, 'Ntja e ntle.' (The dog is beautiful.) Let’s write it down. Remember to put a full stop at the end. After we write it, we will read it aloud together, paying attention to our punctuation.
It's your turn to write! Think of your favorite animal and write a sentence about it. For example, 'Kereke e na le ntja.' (The church has a dog.) Remember to use a full stop at the end of your sentence. After writing, draw a picture of your animal and share your sentence with a partner. Make sure to check each other’s sentences for correct punctuation and spacing.
