Today, we will explore phonics, which is the relationship between sounds and letters. We will focus on the sounds of the letters 's', 't', and 'm' in siSwati. I will say a sound, and you will repeat it after me. Let's practice together: 's', 't', 'm'. Great! Now, let's think of words that start with these sounds.
Let's build some words using the sounds we practiced. For the sound 's', we can create the word 'sita' (sit). For 't', we can use 'tela' (tell), and for 'm', we can form 'mama' (mother). I will write these words on the board. Now, let's say them together and clap for each syllable: si-ta, te-la, ma-ma.
Now that we have our words, let's create sentences. I will give you a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, with 'sita', we can say 'Ngiyahamba sitani' (I am sitting). Let's try another one with 'tela'. What can we say? Yes! 'Ngiyafuna ukutela' (I want to tell). Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end of your sentences.
Now it's your turn! I want you to choose one of the sounds we practiced today: 's', 't', or 'm'. Write down three words that start with that sound. Then, use each word in a sentence. Make sure to check your sentences for correct punctuation and spacing. After you finish, we will share some of our sentences with the class.
