Punctuation marks are important in writing because they help us understand the meaning of sentences. For example, a full stop (.) tells us that a sentence has ended, while a question mark (?) shows that someone is asking something. Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at the sentence: 'Ngiyahamba emsebenzini' (I am going to work). If we want to ask a question, we should change it to 'Ngiyahamba emsebenzini?' (Am I going to work?). Notice how the question mark changes the meaning. Now, let’s add a full stop to a statement: 'Ngiyafunda' (I am learning). It should be 'Ngiyafunda.' with a full stop at the end.
Now, let’s practice together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me add the correct punctuation. For example, if I say 'Uthanda ukudla' (He loves food), what punctuation should we add? Yes, we need a full stop at the end! Let’s try another one: 'Uphi umngani wakho' (Where is your friend?). What do we need here? Correct, a question mark! Let’s continue with more sentences.
