A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In siSwati, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand when a sentence ends. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to use these punctuation marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. For instance, 'Ngiyathanda ukudla.' (I love to eat.) is a complete sentence that ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'Uphi umngani wakho?' (Where is your friend?), we use a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say 'Ngiyajabula!' (I am happy!) and use an exclamation mark.
Now, let’s practice writing sentences together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, if I say 'Uthanda imidlalo.' (He/She loves games.), we will write it down and add a full stop at the end. After that, we will discuss why we used that punctuation. Let’s try another one: 'Uphi umama?' (Where is mom?) What punctuation do we need for this sentence?
