A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Tshivenda, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help our sentences make sense. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). A full stop is used at the end of a statement, a question mark is used at the end of a question, and an exclamation mark shows excitement or strong feelings.
Let's look at some examples of sentences: 'Ndi a funa u shuma.' (I love to work.) This sentence ends with a full stop. Now, if we ask a question, like 'Ndi a vha ngani?' (Why are they here?), we use a question mark at the end. Lastly, for excitement, we can say 'Ndi khou livhuwa!' (I am happy!), which ends with an exclamation mark.
Now, let's practice together! I will say a sentence, and you will tell me what punctuation mark we should use at the end. For example, if I say 'Ndi khou bva.' (I am going out.), what do we use? Yes, a full stop! Let's try another one: 'U na nnyi?' (Who do you have?). Correct, we use a question mark! Keep listening and we will write some sentences together.
Now it's your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to use the correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After you finish writing, share your sentences with a partner and check if they used the right punctuation. This will help you learn from each other!
