A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. In Tshivenda, we use full stops (.) to end statements, question marks (?) for questions, and exclamation marks (!) for strong feelings. Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use the right punctuation.
Let's look at some examples. 'Ndi a funa u shuma.' (I love to work.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Ndi a funa u shuma?' (Do I love to work?) Notice the question mark at the end. Lastly, for excitement, we can say, 'Ndi a funa u shuma!' (I love to work!) Here, we use an exclamation mark.
Now, let's create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'mukoma' (brother), you might say, 'Mukoma ndi a shuma.' (My brother is working.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Let's try a few more words together!
It's your turn to write! Think of three things you like. Write a sentence for each thing, making sure to use the correct punctuation. For example, if you like 'mashudu' (mangoes), you could write, 'Ndi a funa mashudu.' (I love mangoes.) After you finish, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the correct punctuation.
