Reading fluency is the ability to read text smoothly and accurately. In this lesson, we will focus on reading short texts aloud, paying attention to expression and punctuation. Good readers use their voices to convey meaning, making stories come alive. We will discuss how punctuation marks like commas and periods help us know when to pause and when to stop.

Let's read a short story together. The story is about a little bird that learns to fly. As we read, I will model how to use expression. For example, when the bird is excited, I will read with a happy tone. When the bird is scared, I will use a softer voice. After reading, we will discuss how the bird felt at different parts of the story and how I used my voice to show those feelings.

Now, it's your turn! In small groups, choose a short text from the classroom library. Each student will take turns reading a sentence aloud. Remember to use expression based on the punctuation. After reading, discuss with your group how the characters might be feeling and how you can show that through your voice. I will walk around to listen and provide support.

For independent practice, I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After writing, read your sentences aloud to a partner, using expression to show how your animal feels. Pay attention to your punctuation as you read.
