Phonics is the method of teaching reading and writing by developing learners' phonemic awareness. In Tshivenda, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. For example, the letter 'b' makes the sound /b/, and when combined with 'a' and 't', they form the word 'bat'. Understanding these sounds helps us read and write better.
Let’s look at some examples of how to build words using phonics. If we take the sounds /m/, /a/, and /t/, we can blend them together to form the word 'mat'. Similarly, if we use /s/, /u/, and /n/, we create the word 'sun'. It’s important to practice these sounds and blend them to form new words.
In groups, students will be given a set of phonetic sounds. They will work together to create as many words as they can using those sounds. For example, if the sounds are /k/, /a/, and /t/, they can form 'cat'. Afterward, each group will share their words with the class, and we will discuss the meanings of these words.
Now it’s time for you to practice writing! Using the words you created in the group activity, write three sentences. Remember to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. For example, if you wrote 'The cat is on the mat.', make sure to use a full stop at the end. After writing, share your sentences with a partner and read them aloud.
