A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Xitsonga, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to use these punctuation marks correctly in our sentences.
Let’s look at some examples. 'Nna ndi na nwana.' (I have a child.) is a simple sentence that ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'U na nwana?' (Do you have a child?), we use a question mark. For excitement, we can say 'Nna ndi khumbule nwana!' (I remembered the child!), which ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with the correct punctuation.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a sentence, and you will help me add the correct punctuation. For example, if I say 'Nna ndi khoma buku', you will tell me that it should be 'Nna ndi khoma buku.' with a full stop. Let’s try another one: 'U ya kae'. What punctuation should we use? Yes, it should be 'U ya kae?' with a question mark. Great job!
Now it’s your turn! I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation mark. After you finish writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the right punctuation and spacing.
