A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Xitsonga, sentences often start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.) or a question mark (?). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to show when a sentence ends.
Let’s look at some examples. 'Nna ndi na maphu.' (I have a book.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we ask a question, like 'U na maphu?' (Do you have a book?), it ends with a question mark. Notice how the punctuation helps us understand the meaning of the sentence.
Now, let’s write a sentence together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. The sentence is: 'Nna ndi suka esikolweni.' (I come from school.) What do we need at the beginning? Yes, a capital letter! And what do we need at the end? Correct, a full stop! Let’s write it together and make sure we leave spaces between the words.
