Phonics is the method of teaching reading and writing by developing learners' awareness of sound-letter relationships. Today, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. We will also look at how to use these words in sentences with proper punctuation.
Let's take the sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/. When we blend these sounds together, we form the word 'cat'. Now, let's try another one: /d/, /o/, and /g/. When we blend these sounds, we get 'dog'. Notice how each sound contributes to the whole word. We can also add 's' to make 'cats' or 'dogs' to show more than one.
Now that we have built some words, let's use them in sentences. For example, 'The cat is on the mat.' Notice the capital letter at the beginning and the full stop at the end. I will say a word, and you will help me create a sentence. Let's start with 'bird'. What sentence can we make with 'bird'? Remember to think about punctuation!
On your own, I want you to choose three words from our phonics list. Write each word in a sentence. Make sure to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After you finish, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have correct punctuation and spacing.
