Punctuation marks are important in writing because they help us understand how to read sentences. For example, a period (.) tells us to stop, while a question mark (?) shows that someone is asking something. Today, we will learn how to use these marks correctly in our writing.

Let's look at the sentence: 'the dog runs fast' without any punctuation. How can we make it clearer? We can add a period at the end: 'The dog runs fast.' Notice how we also capitalized the first letter. This makes the sentence correct and easy to read.

In small groups, students will receive a short paragraph with missing punctuation. They will read the paragraph together and discuss where punctuation marks should be added. After discussing, each group will present their corrected paragraph to the class, explaining their choices.

Students will write three sentences about their favorite animal. They must remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After writing, they will swap papers with a partner to check each other's work for correct punctuation and spacing.
