Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their spellings. In isiNdebele, we have specific sounds that correspond to letters. Today, we will focus on the sounds of vowels and consonants. For example, the letter 'a' makes the sound /a/, and the letter 'b' makes the sound /b/. Understanding these sounds will help us read and write better.

Let's take the sounds /m/, /a/, and /t/. When we combine these sounds, we form the word 'mat'. Now, let's try another example. If we take the sounds /s/, /u/, and /n/, we can build the word 'sun'. Notice how each sound contributes to the final word. We will practice this with more examples in class.

Now that we have practiced building words, let's create sentences. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'dog', we can say 'The dog runs fast.' Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. Let's try another one together: if I say 'cat', what sentence can we create?
