Punctuation marks are essential in writing as they help convey meaning. In isiXhosa, we use full stops (.), commas (,), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!) to structure our sentences. For example, a full stop indicates the end of a statement, while a question mark shows that a sentence is asking something. Today, we will learn how to use these punctuation marks correctly in our writing.
Let's look at the following sentence: 'uThandi uhamba esikolweni' (Thandi is going to school). This sentence is correct, but if we want to ask a question, we should change it to 'uThandi uhamba esikolweni?' (Is Thandi going to school?). Notice how the question mark changes the meaning of the sentence. We will practice identifying and correcting sentences together.
Now, I will give you some words, and together we will create sentences. For example, if I say 'umntwana' (child), 'dada' (father), and 'uhamba' (is going), we can form the sentence 'Umntwana uhamba noDada.' (The child is going with father.) Remember to use a full stop at the end of your sentence. Let's try a few more together before you work on your own.

After writing, swap your work with a partner and check each other's sentences for any punctuation mistakes. Discuss what you find and help each other correct any errors.
