A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' means 'Thandi loves to play.' We will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. 'UJohn uthanda izinja.' means 'John loves dogs.' Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Uphi uThandi?' which means 'Where is Thandi?' This sentence ends with a question mark. Let’s practice writing sentences together!
Now, let’s work together to create sentences. I will give you a picture of a cat. What can we say about it? Let’s write: 'Le nkunzi iyamangalisa.' which means 'This cat is amazing.' Make sure to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After writing, we will read our sentences aloud to the class.
For your independent practice, I want you to think of your favorite animal. Write three sentences about it. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and check if they have used punctuation correctly.
