A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiZulu, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand sentences better. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). A full stop is used at the end of a statement, a question mark is used at the end of a question, and an exclamation mark shows excitement or strong feelings.
Let’s look at some examples: 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. Now, if we ask a question, we can say, 'UThandi uyadlala na?' (Is Thandi playing?) This sentence ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say, 'UThandi udlala kahle!' (Thandi plays well!) This sentence ends with an exclamation mark.
Now, let’s create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me make a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ngithanda ibhola.' (I love the ball.) Remember to add a full stop at the end. Let’s try another word: 'umndeni' (family). What sentence can we create? After we create a sentence, we will check if we used the correct punctuation.
